In the established democracies – democracies according to the concepts of Schumpeter and Dahl – this process has come almost to an end. But as globalization reduces more and more the political ability of the traditional nation state to define and implement efficient policies, democracy faces a new challenge: How to deal with the growing imbalance between a globalized economy and democratic political systems, restricted in their ability to act by the limitations of nation states?
