Abstract The situation of refugees is questioned from the perspective of a phenomenology of the stranger, focusing on the arrival of refugees fleeing from persecution. Taking up Levinas’s ethics of the Other and Derrida’s reflections on hospitality, it will be argued that the un-conditional demand of the Other has to be taken as something arising here and now, exceeding the concrete conditions. Various issues are discussed such as registration in relation to the immigrant’s singularity, the transitional state of waiting, and integration as a process. This leads to a responsive sort of politics.
