Europe: le grand tournant
in Politique internationale , La Revue n°155 - PRINTEMPS - 2017 , 2017
As undersecretary for European Affairs for the past three years, Sandro Gozi is the Italian government's "Mr. Europe". He notes that, under Matteo Renzi, Italy proved that it had become a more credible partner, particularly on immigration issues: for the past two years the country has been on the front lines in dealing with the massive influx of refugees along its coasts. In response to Brexit and mounting Euroscepticism, Sandro Gozi recommends an "adjustable" EU, comprising smaller groupings that remain open to all on a voluntary basis. Measures affording greater protection must be introduced to reconcile citizens with Europe, backed by new rules for a return to a real economic growth policy, as well as the creation of a Eurozone budget for investments and a social Union. These are big ambitions, aligned with the huge challenges that lie ahead.
