UK Defence Secretary since 2014, Michael Fallon is now in charge of stewarding the divorce between the EU and the United Kingdom in this key area. Attempting to minimize the differences and calm worries, the British minister believes that Brexit will not change his country's commitments as a member of NATO and a guarantor of European security. Mr. Fallon also promises to increase the defense budget, purchase new equipment and modernize Britain's nuclear deterrent force. However, this idealized vision may well run into reality. European security and defense policy has little chance of developing without the political, financial and military support of London. The same uncertainties hover over NATO, which the United Kingdom considers a "priority", but which the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, intends to reform.
