Jean-Louis Bourlanges, who was a center-right member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2007, is a recognized expert on the workings of the EU, a universally respected intellectual and the author of numerous seminal works. In this interview he shares his vision of Brexit and its consequences. He believes that the biggest loser after this historic vote will be the United Kingdom itself. The British had enjoyed a special status within the EU: they benefited from all the advantages that come with open trade and political influence, their budget contribution was substantially reduced, and they did not suffer any of the constraints imposed by the euro and the Schengen Area. As he points out, it is not Europe, but rather the successes of Britain's own diplomacy that have been undermined by the referendum. Mr. Bourlanges sees virtually no possibility of a snowball effect that would encourage other states to follow suit and leave the EU, stating that "nobody is ready to jump ship".
