    Joseph Caillaux, minister and prominent radical politician of the French Third Republic, was well known for his pacifist feelings. Perhaps he could positively affect the development of events leading up to the First World War. But at the time of the crisis he was no more a member of the government because of the trial of his wife accused of the murder of his relentless opponent, the director of ĞLe Figaroğ, Calmette.
