    This study focuses on the case of cross-border regions in Europe. Its research design centres on two aspects of this topic. Firstly, it analyses the institutional performance of those regions in terms of public policy. As a first result, it can be stated that crossborder regions usually perform quite poorly. Nevertheless, a majority of them implement policy programmes in the fields of education, culture and transport. Secondly, this study aims to explore the variables able to explain that result. In general terms, the most efficient cross-border regions’ features are their period of creation, their socio-economic level and their integration of local governance systems level.
