    The financial and sovereign debt crisis had a major impact on the Spanish State of Autonomies and polarized between those who advocate for a greater centralization and those who demand new options for self-government. The analysis argues that although the crisis has had a negative impact on the State of Autonomies and the debate on the level of spending and responsibilities of the Autonomous Communities among citizens, this debate already begun before the crisis broke out. Moreover, the crisis has had a major impact in Unitarian states or with less decentralized structure. The crisis had less impact in states with a federal structure, so there appears not to be a direct relationship between decentralization and economic crisis.
