| This volume offers a historical reflection on certain key aspects of the process of European integration, thanks to the scientific input of an international team of scholars from numerous European and non-European Universities. Despite the broad range of issues dealt with, the essays presented here are linked by a common theme: the aim of «mapping» historical studies on European integration in relation to certain defining features of the process. The result of transnational cooperation that makes it possible to focus on the different approaches to the study of Europe building adopted in the various national academic communities, this project adopts a dual approach – thematic and interdisciplinary – with the aim of investigating the central elements of the creation of the European Union. Starting from certain key thematic nuclei – the concept of European identity (in all its forms); Community policies (industrial, environmental, territorial, social, equal opportunities); European Community/Union actors (trade unions, transnational parties, etc.); the role of the regions and regionalism; the EU’s external relations – this volume adopts a historical viewpoint which allows it to reconstruct the evolution and changes from a long-term perspective also in relation to the challenges of globalization. |
