CSF - Works of Mario Albertini
| Mario Albertini was born in Pavia (Italy) in 1919. Convinced of the historical necessity of European union, he joined the European Federalist Movement (MFE) in 1945. After his university degree in Philosophy, he entered the academic career at the Pavia University teaching Contemporary History, Political Science, Theory of the State and Philosophy of Politics. From 1953 his federalist commitment became a priority, first as a close co-worker and later as the successor of Altiero Spinelli. In 1959 he founded the political review “Il Federalista”, which is still being published in Italian and in English. He was the leader of MFE since 1966, and he was President of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) from 1975 to 1984. His political and intellectual engagement continued to guide the MFE policy until his death in 1997.Mario Albertini devoted his whole life as scholar and militant to federalism, giving an innovative contribution to its theory and political praxis. Bringing down into the realities of the struggle for the European federation the political categories he was focused on in his theoretical work, he gave us the key for interpreting the in-depth significance of the historical phase we are living in now. At the same time, he contributed in a decisive way to organize the federalist force and to work out a strategy suitable for a difficult and brand new task: to found a new, federal State in a continent composed of consolidated national States. |
